Recent Training

ASHRAE seminar: Commissioning for Green Buildings
This "greenbag" lunch seminar held recently in downtown Seattle was an excellent way to learn about some of the issues regarding building commissioning especially as they pertain to green buildings. I found the comparisons between the current and future Washington State Energy Code, LEED fundamental and enhanced commissioning and ASHRAE Guidleline 0 to be particularly useful. This session placed these codes/guidelines into a hierarchy in my mind which will prove useful when I move forward in implementing them with future projects

Turner Construction University: MEP Fundamentals: Process Course: Passed
This course provides a great introduction to the process of taking MEP from original contract relationships, to sub-contractor roles, in field sequencing, comissioning and project closeout. It is likely very simple for anyone who has worked for a general contractor before, but I found it to be a great value for my time because I was able to learn a lot about moving from contracts, plans and drawings to installation, comissioning and turnover.

LEED Accredited Professional Examination
I participated in a number of formal and informal sessions to prepare for the LEED AP examination I passed in June, 2009. A formal review of the Reference Guide during an Orange County USGBC sponsored event was very useful in combining all my past personal studies together into a more coherent understanding of the intent and scope of many of the credits.

Previous Training
The bulk of my training to date has taken place in a formal classroom, but I am learning to look for wider opportunities to learn the skills that a successful career demands.

I have attended many of the United States Green Building Council Orange County Chapter monthly meetings which have allowed me to network with professionals and expose myself to relevant topics to the industry through the technical presentations.

In order to better align my skills with most job descriptions I have seen, I have undertaken personal study of AutoCAD 2010 using an education license at home and various reference texts. In a similar fashion I have purchased several of ASHRAE introductory HVAC design handbooks and am refreshing myself on the thermodynamics involved and learning the overall design process.

I am specifically looking for positions that supports their employees professional development, as I believe we never stop being students. I am interested in maintining my LEED AP+ designation, and working towards other certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) and Certified Energy Manager (CEM).

Currently on my bookshelf:

2009 ASHRAE Handbook: Fundamentals

ASHRAE 90.1 Users Manual

ASHRAE 189.1 Green Building Design

HVAC Simplified
This text reviews the thermodynamic principles involved in HVAC operation and quickly moves into system components and design in much more depth than my thermodynamic coursework.
